If you are not happy with the level of financial success you’ve achieved, you are not alone. Whether you are making a decent income or unemployed, dissatisfaction is common. You must put yourself on the right track by first defining what financial success means to you.
Consider this: if you got behind the wheel of your car and drove aimlessly, would you get to your destination? The same holds true for financial success. So many people go through the routine of their day without a thought as to what they are trying to accomplish. After 20, 30, or 40 years, they are still in the same routine and no closer to happiness than when they started.
Set yourself a financial goal that is challenging but something that you believe is attainable. Be as specific as you can. Write down a vision of yourself in five years and list the following:
How much money do you have saved? What does your cash flow look like? How much money do you have in your pocket after all the bills are paid for discretionary spending? What do you want to spend your money on? How does that make you feel? How much of your day is spent on work? At leisure?
Make sure you think about how you feel about what you have accomplished, the philanthropic activities you support, the pleasure you can bring. By adding emotion to your vision you will become more personally invested in it and this will help you stay motivated to overcome obstacles.
Your vision must be put in writing and you should write it in present tense. Use words like “I am” and “I have”, not “I hope”. Make your dreams real – at least in your mind and on paper. This is the first step towards bringing them to life.
Write it and forget it? No, not quite.
You must write down a 90 day action plan to help put you on the right track. You need to start making concrete steps every day and work your plan. Make sure you allow yourself time to learn new things and make mistakes so that you are not frustrated by lack of progress. Keep your vision statement in front of you and reassess your action plan at least monthly. This will help keep you focused on your goals. Only by doing this will you arrive at your intended destination.
